What We Do

Rotary Serves Breakfast at Halifax Elementary School
Good nutrition is one key to successful achievement at school. The Rotary Club of Halifax North West recognizes this by serving a light breakfast every school day morning at Ecole' Chebucto Heights Elementary School in the Spryfield area of Halifax to students who regrettably are denied the privilege at home and would thus start the day on an empty stomach.
For the third consecutive year those students at Ecole Chebucto Heights Elementary School in Spryfield, Halifax who are not given a breakfast at home, are being treated every week day morning to a light breakfast served by several members of the Rotary Club together with their volunteer friends. On average 15 to 20 students are fed each morning. The menu consists of apple juice or milk, toast or bagels topped with butter, jam or cheese whiz, waffles and syrup and a snack to take away for recess. The snack is generally an apple or a granola bar. All supplies are provided by the School Board.
Volunteers are divided into two teams with teams changing place every fifth week. Each day two volunteers serve the breakfast and tidy up afterwards. The meal begins at 8.00 am and is finished by 9.00 am at the latest. This enables working volunteers to be at their place of work within reasonable time.
The program has been much appreciated by the school's staff, the community it serves and most of all by the participating students. Vice Principal Vince MacNeil is the school's coordinator for the program and he always speaks highly of it and its value to the school and students.
Volunteers are welcome. If you are interested just contact Rotarian Stan Ferguson at

Polio Eradication Fundraising Committee (PEFC)
|
In 1985, RI initiated a campaign to eradicate the scourge of poliomyelitis disease from the world. They have since been joined in this effort by the World Bank, UNICEF, World Health Organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the US Centre for Disease Control.
By the 1990's the Halifax Northwest members were pleased to have exceeded our club's quota of $12,000.00 for this effort.
In the 1990's and into 2000 due to many geopolitical problems, it became clear that the goal of polio eradication was in jeopardy, and that more funds would be needed. We wanted to finish the job by 2005, Rotary Centennial Year. Indeed, the number of polio-infected countries has been reduced from over 125 to well under 10 today.
This final supplementary fundraising is well underway. Our club's goal is $300.00 per member (to help our District 7820 assist RI to meet it's commitment towards the $250 million dollars necessary to complete the final push against polio). The club has worked hard in a group of fundraisers. Herman Hugenholtz staged an impressive individual effort where he ran a marathon and raised several thousand dollars. This Rotary year, fundraising efforts have included the sale of February "hearts candies", flower bulbs in the fall, and Rotary Christmas cards in November.
We are optimistic that our individual club members (some have been very generous to date in this effort) will come through with personal contributions to help finish this important job by the planned date - the end of this Rotary year, June 2008!
